What you need to know about shared custody and COVID-19 vaccine

Being divorced and having shared custody is challenging even without a COVID-19 pandemic! Good news is the COVID-19 vaccination is now available for many aged 18 years and older. That means many parents can get in line — if they wish, for the vaccine.

BUT WHAT ABOUT TEENS AND KIDS? Some pharmaceutical companies are now including 16 year old participants. And clinical trials have begun in children age 12 and younger. In short, the research is ongoing.

So, depending on your circumstances, it’s best to get a plan in place for the COVID-19 vaccine. Talk to your EX and children about it and keep your eye on the most recent studies of the COVID-19 vaccine and children.

Tips for COVID-19 Vaccination and Divorced Families:

KEEP TRACK: The current vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna require two doses. Make sure you keep track of getting that 2nd dose. Pfizer’s second dose comes three weeks after the first, while Moderna’s comes four weeks later. So put that vaccination date on your calendar, or you’ll have to start all over again.

HOW IT WORKS: Once administered, the COVID-19 vaccine works to help your body develop immunity to the virus in the future.

Chief epidemiology officer Dr. Nicole M. Lovine at University of Florida Health Shands Hospital says,

“The vaccine is our best tool yet for controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is important to remember that the vaccine will not end the pandemic on its own. That is because, like all vaccines, it cannot prevent 100% of all infections in vaccinated persons. Although the studies indicate efficacy rates of 90% or more, a small percentage of people will still develop COVID.”

UNINSURED AND GETTING THE COVID-19 VACCINATION

If you or your EX are currently uninsured, no worries! According to federal health officials, the COVID-19 vaccine is free to all who are uninsured. You can “Google” free COVID-19 vaccines in your area or check out this CDC site for provider updates.

Even after receiving your COVID-19 vaccine, health officials advise for you and your children to: wear masks, disinfect, wash hands and maintain a safe 6 foot distance.
